Our journey to parenthood still feels surreal. Infertility is a rollercoaster that you don’t want to be on, taking you slowly up each hill and barreling you down, only to climb another. Initially when my husband and I started trying to grow our family, we “didn’t stress” (which ended up being the most common and unwelcome piece of advice offered by well-meaning friends). When we didn’t get pregnant after a few months of trying, I tried not to worry even though I was desperately afraid that something was wrong.
Read MoreLike many middle class educated professional women, I was unable to find a suitable mate. I spent my 30s pining for Mr Right, so I could get on with creating a family much like the one I grew up in. After some challenging relationships my 40th birthday marked a turning point in my search. I was no longer going to look for “him” I was going to create my own family.
Read MoreJohn and I met in 2002 and got married in May 2004. We started building our dream together of having a family and building lots of memories with our children. We tried getting pregnant for years with no success. After consulting different doctors we found out that I have Polycystic Ovaries, which is the main reason why I couldn’t get pregnant.
Read MoreAfter almost 5 years of trying to conceive and working with doctors, plus 4 failed rounds of IUI we looked at the thought of proceeding down the journey of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Neither Bryce or I had anything medically wrong that prevented us from having children or impacted the process, it just simply wasn't going to happen on its own.

Discover the surging trend of Canadians opting for egg freezing to defer parenthood due to reasons like partner challenges and financial readiness. Over the past decade, egg freezing treatments in Canada have skyrocketed, with 1,524 recorded in 2022 compared to 94 in 2013. The COVID-19 pandemic is considered a potential influencer, prompting contemplation of future plans. However, the substantial cost, averaging $12,000 to $15,000 per cycle, highlights the need for financial support from employers and governments. Personal stories, like a woman becoming a single mother after freezing eggs at 37, emphasize the empowering aspect. Varying public funding levels across provinces and advocacy for increased support underscore the essential role of fertility treatments in family planning. Explore the evolving landscape of reproductive choices in Canada.
Dr. Areiyu Zhang of Olive Fertility Centre shares insights on the three-month delay of BC’s publicly funded IVF program. She highlights the uncertainty patients face as they await details on how funding will be managed and allocated. With many eager families struggling with the timing, some have chosen to move forward with treatment rather than wait. Read more about Dr. Zhang’s perspective in CBC’s latest article.
Dr. Al Yuzpe and Dr. Jason Hitkari of Olive Fertility Centre stress the urgency of timely fertility treatments as BC postpones its publicly funded IVF program. With many patients delaying treatment to access funding, Dr. Yuzpe cautions that waiting can reduce the chances of conception. Dr. Hitkari highlights the added challenge of potential waitlists once applications open. Both doctors continue to advocate for infertility to be recognized as a medical condition requiring coverage. Infertility is a deeply personal journey, often navigated in silence. But the truth is, it’s far more common than most people realize. Around one in six couples globally will face fertility challenges, a number that makes infertility not a rarity but a reality for many. Still, the emotional weight of infertility is often unseen, marked by silent grief, strained relationships and isolation. But with growing research and compassion behind it, mindfulness is emerging as a meaningful source of support.

At some point, every patient asks me this in some form or another. Of course, I don’t know beyond an educated guess. What forms the basis of my guess, besides my education and experience? Number of eggs and age.

The world feels a little uncertain these days with turmoil in politics, the environment, and health care. The desire to be our "best selves" particularly in January is constant however. To improve some part of our lives feels particularly important when the world around seems less in our control. Personally, I’ll make the usual resolutions and eat less junk food, move more and be more patient. What will you resolve? Maybe you don’t make resolutions, but if you do and they include something like "do everything I can to get pregnant in 2025" here is my advice.

Over half of our patients doing IVF opt for PGT. PGT involves biopsying blastocyst embryos (typically day 5-7 embryos) and sending the cells to a genetic testing lab for analysis. The lab analyzes the cells to determine how many chromosomes the cells have and whether there are any large pieces missing or duplicated.
